Don't do anything that divides society: Patil
Tuesday, March 14 2006 15:09 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: In an obvious reference to the proposed yatra by BJP leader L K Advani from April six, Government today(Mar 14,2006) appealed to political parties to avoid any situation that divides society on religious lines and incites people.

"We should not do anything by taking out Rath Yatras which could divide society for any religious purpose," Home Minister Shivraj Patil said in the Lok Sabha.

He said such yatras put enormous pressure on police and the law and order machinery, adding any untoward incident arising out of it affects the entire society.

"I request political parties to exercise judgement and not do anything which could be divisive and create complications on religious lines," Patil said.

He was replying to a Calling Attention Motion moved by CPM leader Basudeb Acharya on the situation arising out of alleged brutual attack and killing of 13 Adivasis in police firing in Kalinga Nagar in Orissa on January two this year.

Advani, who is Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, had announced twin national integration yatras to be undertaken by him and BJP President Rajnath Singh in the wake of recent Varanasi bomb blasts.
