Demolition of mosque platform sparks off tension
Tuesday, March 14 2006 19:58 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in the Old City areas when the police and Wakf Board personnel demolished a portion of a platform of the historic Makkah masjid late last night police said today (Mar 14 2006).

The demolition work started late last night on an order by city Police Commissioner A K Mohanty, who felt that the platform adjoning the main entrance of the mosque was being used by some for anti-social activities.

As the news of the demolition spread, a large number of local people gathered and protested against the demolition, which forced the authorities to stop the work.

The Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) legislators Mumtaz Ahmed Khan and Ahmed Pasha Khadri alleged that the police and Wakf Board "created unnecessary controversy through their action."
