Assam: EC looks into specific problems of execution Thursday, March 16 2006 15:47 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Guwahati:
The Election Commission will look into specific problems of Assam regarding execution of non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against former insurgents, militant outfits on ceasefire or those holding peace talks with the government.
Deputy Election Commissioner R Balakrishnan told sources here today (Mar 16 2006) that specific problems of different areas of Assam, going to the assembly polls on April three and ten next, would be studied in detail and necessary action taken in case of any particular problem.
No special reference had, however, been received from the state government requesting for non-execution of NBWs against militants on ceasefire, former extremists or those holding peace talks, Balakrishnan said.
If any representation was received on a state-specific situation, he said, a decision would be taken by the EC taking all the dimensions into consideration.
Regarding execution of NBWs in the state, the deputy EC said 2291 had been implemented in the last eight days with 21000 more to be executed.
The Election Commission was also taking daily reports on NBW execution to "basically ensure that a sense of rule of law prevails and the law and order climate improves," Balakrishnan added.
