Residents clash in Navi Mumbai, police open fire
Thursday, March 16 2006 14:46 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Mumbai: One person was killed and seven others were injured in a clash between two groups, prompting police to open fire to control the situation, while several policemen also sustained injuries as the crowd pelted stones at them in Navi Mumbai, police said today (Mar 16 2006).

The trouble started at Ghansoli village after some `mathadi' (porters) workers allegedly molested a local girl yesterday, which led to attack by villagers on `mathadi workers' colony this morning, police said.

As the crowds became unruly, police opened fire, they said.

A bodyguard of an official of mathadi workers' union was killed in the attack, sources added.

The mob also attacked fire brigade vehicles and at least two vehicles are damaged, sources said.
