Curfew in Koparkhairane following unabated violence

Mumbai: Curfew was imposed at Koparkhairane village in Navi Mumbai today (Mar 18 2006) after the spate of violence continued unabated for the third day in succession, police said.

Orders prohibiting assembly of persons has been imposed in Koparkhairane village, Koparkhairane chowky of Rabale police station, Bonkawade village and Gulab Dairy precincts, the sources said.

Earlier in the afternoon, police cane charged a crowd near the Koparkhairane police chowky this afternoon after rioters ransacked shops, damaged private vehicles and set some of them on fire.

The entire Navi Mumbai satellite township has been witnessing violence for the past three days in the aftermath of the incident in which Mathadi workers (porters) allegedly molested a girl from Ghansoli on the festival of Holi.
