New Delhi:
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) today (Mar 20 2006) assured India that it would not allow its territory to be used for any terrorist activity or as a transit point for movement of terrorists.
The assurance came after a 30-minute meeting between CBI Director Vijay Shanker and the Chief of Security Services Department of UAE Lt Gen Sheikh Hazza bin Zayeed Al Nahayan here this morning.
"The UAE has assured us that it would not allow its territory to be used by terrorists either for their activities or as a transit point," Shanker told sources after the meeting.
During the discussions, the two sides took up the issue of people wanted by the CBI in connection with various crimes.
"We submitted a list of 83 people which was reduced as some of them had been deported."
Without naming the person, the CBI Director said "the UAE has promised to deport one person, wanted in 1993 Mumbai blasts, as and when the authorities over there come to know about his whereabouts."
The talks between the two sides also covered issues pertaining to bilateral co-operation, sharing of information and imparting training. The CBI Director informed his UAE counterpart that he could send his officials for training at the CBI academy based in Ghaziabad.
The two sides also laid special emphasis on sharing of timely information about terrorist movement, drug and organised mafia.
