BJP opposes any ordinance bringing office of profit
Wednesday, March 22 2006 15:33 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: The Opposition BJP today (Mar 22 2006) opposed any move by the Government to bring an ordinance to take away some posts from the list of office for profit alleging it was being done to protect UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who is also Chairperson of the National Advisory Council.

"The Congress party was gloating over the action taken against a Rajya Sabha Member (SP's Jaya Bachchan) for being a holder of an office of profit but now a proposal is on for an ordinance to save all similar cases of MPs in respect of holding offices of profit," Leader of Opposition L K Advani told sources here.

"Why this brain wave has struck the Government?", he asked and referred to "one of the slogans raised in both the Houses against the move 'Baaki Sab to bahana hain, Soniaji ko bachana hain (The Rest is all excuse, the main aim is to protect Sonia) sums up the rationale behind it. It should not be done and we are opposed to it."

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Jaswant Singh said the BJP was "not agreeable" to any proposal to adjourn sine die both Houses of Parliament and prorogue it to bring an ordinance to amend the law relating to office of profit.

"We don't see any urgency to warrant such a move. If somebody is likely to get caught in fire, why the Parliament is being made a victim?" he asked.
