Uproar in both Houses as members of SP protested Wednesday, March 22 2006 12:09 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for a brief period as members of the Samajwadi Party trooped into the well protesting Government's reported move to bring an ordinance to exempt some posts from the purview of offices of profit.
Waving a newspaper report, they demanded bringing back their party member in Rajya Sabha, Jaya Bachchan, who was disqualified for holding an office of profit. In Lok Sabha, they were joined by BJP members.
While Lok Sabha was first adjourned for 15 minutes and then again till 1300 hours, the Rajya Sabha witnessed uproarious scenes leading to its adjournment till 1130 hours.
The members raised slogans like 'Navin Chawla ko bhagao, Jaya Bachchan ko wapas lao' (Remove Navin Chawla, bring back Jaya Bachchan) and 'Ye sab bahana hai, Sonia ko bachana hai' (This is a pretext to save Sonia Gandhi).
The SP and BJP members were seen waving copies of a newspaper report which said the government was considering bringing an ordinance to amend the Parliament (Prevention of
Disqualification) Act, 1959 to exempt a fresh batch of offices from its purview including the National Advisory Council, headed by Gandhi, and the Indian Council for Cultural
Research, headed by Karan Singh.
