Mamata demands resignation of Speaker, CPI(M) MPs Thursday, March 23 2006 19:26 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kolkata:
Stepping up her campaign, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today (Mar 23 2006) sought the resignation of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, whom she has accused of holding office of profit, and 10 other CPI(M) MPs and said Sonia Gandhi had no option but to quit as MP as her membership could have been disqualified.
"We have already moved President A P J Abdul Kalam and the Election Commission on March 8, seeking action against 11 CPI(M) MPs who enjoy offices of profit", Banerjee told sources here.
"If Jaya Bachchan could be disqualified, how can they continue? They have to follow law and law is the same for everyone," she said.
To a question, Banerjee said CPI(M) MPs 'enjoyed various facilities'.
Asked if sine die adjounement of Parliament was a move to save someone, Banerjee said "I don't know. But those who violated law have to be punished."
"There was no way for Sonia Gandhi other than resigning.
Otherwise, she could have been disqualified", she said.
