Security stepped up for assembly polls in J&K: DGP Sunday, March 26 2006 12:54 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Apprehending that forces opposed to the democratic process might try to disturb peace during the upcoming assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, the Director General of state police has asked security agencies to facilitate the participation of people in the process.
Exercising extra alterness and close cooperation between various wings of security agencies is key to frustrate nefarious designs of disruptive elements, Gopal Sharma said addressing a joint meeting of police and security forces here last evening.
The meeting was convened to finalize security arrangements for the forthcoming assembly elections in four assembly segments of the state - three in Kashmir and one in Jammu division.
The Kashmir police chief said forces opposing the democratic process might try to disturb peace and create hurdles in smooth conduct of polling in Pattan, Sangrama, Rafiabad and Bhaderwah going to polls on April 24.
Law enforcing agencies
Sharma asked the law enforcing agencies that all efforts should be made so that the people could participate in the election process without any fear.
He also reviewed over all existing security scenario of the valley with special reference to Srinagar in view of the 'darbar' move, under which government offices function for six months each in Jammu and Srinagar.
The government secretariat and other offices are scheduled to move to summer capital in the first week of May this year.
Sharma asked police and security agencies to take all precautions for security of the offices and employees.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir K Rajendra Kumar briefed the meeting about the security measures being taken to strengthen the security set-up in Pattan, Sangrama and Rafiabad assembly constituencies.
He said additional contingents of police and security forces are being deployed in these segments to ensure smooth conduct of election.
Rajendra also presented the detail of security arrangement being made for smooth return of government offices in the summer capital.
