DMK candidates for polls to be announced soon Wednesday, March 29 2006 14:14 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Chennai:
DMK's candidates for the May 8 assembly polls in Tamil Nadu would be announced in a couple of days, party chief M Karunanidhi said here today (Mar 29, 2006).
Releasing the party's manifesto, he told reporters that the list will be released "As soon as it is ready within two days".
He said the Election Commission should take steps to prevent distribution of 'solatium' in the name of welfare schemes in the state by the AIADMK government.
Declining to comment on Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's charge that the EC was preventing the state government from implementing ongoing welfare schemes, he said it was for the EC to react to the accusation.
Commenting on the revival of Common Entrance Test for admissions to professional colleges in the state, he said the government stand on the issue was 'confusing' students as it had not been following a consistent policy on the issue.
On Jayalalithaa's remarks that the coming assembly polls would be AIADMK's last fight with DMK, he said "It only showed their low and cheap mentality."
It was because of the 'civilised polity' that the Centre was silent on Jayalalithaa's charge that UPA government was blocking several schemes of the state, he said.
But opposition parties would refute the charge during electioneering, he added.
