New Delhi: The Supreme Court today (Mar 31, 2006) dismissed a petition seeking direction to the Centre and Uttar Pradesh Government to take appropriate steps to ensure safety of all religious places in Varanasi in the wake of recent blasts at Sankat Mochan Temple and Varanasi Cantt Railway Station.

A Bench headed by Justice Ruma Pal dismissed the petition filed by Mohammed Aslam alias Bhure observing that the authorities were doing their job.

Bhure known for filing PILs on Ayodhya dispute, had urged the Court to direct the Varanasi authorities to regulate the entry of devotees at religious places at Varanasi to ensure that large number of people do not assemble near these places.

In his petition filed through advocate M M Kashyap, he had also requested the authorities to put barricades near the religious places at Varanasi and increase the security.

He had sought to draw the court's attention to certain orders passed by the Apex court in the past, directing the authorities to take measures to ensure safety of Vishwanath temple and Gyanvapi Masjid at Varanasi and Krishna temple and Idgah at Mathura.
