'Offer of bullet proofing shows poor internal security' Saturday, April 1 2006 16:06 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Flaying the Centre for offering to bullet-proof the vehicles carrying him and his predecessor L K Advani during the upcoming yatras, BJP President Rajnath Singh today (Apr 1, 2006) said this reflected the country's 'poor' internal security.
Set to launch the first leg of his party's twin yatras on April 6, the BJP president also accused the Centre of inaction against terrorism.
"The bullet proofing they offered for our vehicles during the yatras shows how poor the security situation in the country is," Singh told his party's cooperative cell meeting here.
His comments came in the wake of Union Home Secretary V K Duggal's remarks that the National Security Guards could be asked to make the yatra vehicles bullet proof in the light of what he cited as high security risks to the event.
The BJP leader, who hailed the NDA for brining in POTA, attacked the ruling UPA for the repeal of the anti-terror law.
"The repeal of POTA shows the Congress-led UPA's soft attitude towards terrorists. It shows the Centre is reluctant to act against such elements," Singh said.
He also accused the Centre of neglecting what he called a massive demographic imbalance in Assam, which is scheduled for assembly elections from April 3.
"The Centre is not taking appropriate steps to handle this demographic imbalance in Assam and other north-eastern states, where terrorism is on the rise because of this disturbance in population balance," he said.
