Nalbari (Assam):
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today (Apr 1, 2006) said a Congress Government in Assam would help the state in better coordination with the Centre for development of the state.
Singh, who is on a two-day election campaign in the state, told a rally here that the Centre wanted the state to develop in areas of agriculture, industry, education and healthcare and walk shoulder to shoulder with other states.
"If there is a Congress Government in Assam, there will be better coordination between the state and Delhi as the UPA Government is in power," the Prime Minister, who arrived here this morning, said.
During his stay, Singh is scheduled to address three more election meetings in Balichapuri, Hamran and Tezpur in the state.
Referring to the issue of unemployment, Singh said the Assam Government would work towards the welfare and uplift of the people if Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was given a second chance.
"I can guarantee that the Government led by Congressin the state would take measures for development including concrete steps to deal with floods which create havoc each
year," he added.
Singh said Gogoi has already 'carried out a lot of work' in containing the recurrent floods but more needs to be done to control flooding of the rivers.
"Assam has grown fast under the Gogoi rule and the Congress party would do what is required for the people if brought to power again," Singh said.
