Delhi: Paul meets CM to discuss the state of drive

New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner K K Paul yesterday (Mar 31, 2006) met Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and discussed the situation arising out of the MCD's ongoing demolition and sealing of illegal structures in the national capital.

After the meeting, Paul told reporters that the MCD was being provided with police force as requisitioned by the civic body.

"We are providing help as per the requisition made by the MCD for its demolition and sealing drive," he said.

Asked whether he had requested for additional forces, the Police Commissioner said, "We have asked for additional forces." However, he also added that the current forces were adequate and stressed on the need of proper planning to meet the demand of a particular situation.

Reports had it that the MCD had made a demand for more police help apprehending violent opposition as it went ahead with its drive to seal commercial establishments in residential areas.

Thousands of striking traders obstructed MCD officials from sealing shops and offices in several areas, creating tense moments for the police.

Agitated traders also pelted stones at vehicles, injuring a police constable and damaging the wind shields of buses and vans. Despite the stiff protest the civic body sealed 274 commercial establishments, including multi-storeyed shopping malls, in nine zones of the capital.
