Bangalore: Karnataka government proposed to enact a legislation to provide for punitive action against land grabbers and those officials who collude with them, Minister for Revenue Jagadish Shettar informed the state assembly today (Apr 06, 2006).

The government has identified 4,000 acres of land encroached in and around Bangalore and 2,000 acres had already been recovered, he said while replying to debate on discussions on The Karnataka Land Revenue (2nd Amendment) Bill, which the house passed.

Investigation was continuing to identify the extent of encroachment of government land, he said.

The bill arms the government with powers to auction government land and confer the ownership to the bidder within 30 days of the auction.
