Guwahati:
The elections in Assam and Tamil Nadu would be a stepping stone to the formation of third front in the country, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav said today (Apr 7, 2006).
"We want to make a third force after Assam and Tamil Nadu elections. The results would be a stepping stone for us to forming the third front," Yadav told reporters here prior to his poll campaign for the Asom Gana Parishad for the second phase of election here on April 10.
Asked if he foresaw mid-term polls at the Centre, Yadav said, "There will be a big change after the Assam polls."
Referring to himself, his general secretary Amar Singh and Telugu Desam Party jointly canvassing together for the AGP, he said, "We have all come here together and appeal to the people of Assam to vote in the interest of the state."
Predicting that the election results in Assam and Tamil Nadu would go against the Congress, TDP president Chandrababu Naidu also addressing the joint press meet said, "We are getting all regional and small parties together and grooming them to be a force".
"We want to go to Parliament together also to fight unitedly for national issues," the former Andhra Pradesh chief minister, whose TDP has a floor coordination in Parliament with the AGP, Samajwadi Party, AIDMK and National Conference, said.
Amar Singh said, "We can't ignore the regional forces. We have 80 MPs in Parliament from the AGP, TDP, S P, N C and AIDMK who raise national issues together".
