Advani ask President to fulfill constitutional duty
Sunday, April 9 2006 11:43 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Surat: Reminding President A P J Abdul Kalam that he was 'misled' by the UPA Government on the Bihar Assembly dissolution issue, Leader of Opposition L K Advani today (Apr 09, 2006) urged him to fulfil his 'constitutional responsibility' and take a decision on the removal of Election Commissioner Navin Chawla.

"The President should keep in mind that the UPA Government had once tendered a wrong advice to him on the Bihar Assembly dissolution for which the Supreme Court admonished the Government and the council of Ministers. He (President) was made to sign on a wrong thing.

"I request him to fulfill his constitutional responsibility and I expect him not to delay the issue (Chawla) and take a decision. The Prime Minister has no role in it and it comes under the domain of only the President and the Chief Election Commissioner," Advani told sources here.

The senior BJP leader had yesterday termed as a 'technicality' the Attorney General's clearance to Chawla and asked the Prime Minister to refer the memorandum signed by 205 MPs demanding Chawla's removal to the Chief Election Commissioner.

The Opposition NDA had been demanding Chawla's removal for his alleged proximity to the Congress party including his role during the Emergency and alleged funding received by his NGO.
