Bangla strike after MacGill's career-best figures Monday, April 10 2006 17:10 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Fatullah:
Leg-spinner Stuart MacGill bagged a career-best haul but lowly Bangladesh still put mighty Australia under pressure on the second day of the first cricket Test here today (Apr 10, 2006).
The 35-year-old returned figures of 8-108 as the home side scored 427 in their first innings. In reply, the Aussies were struggling on 50-3 at tea with Michael Hussey not out on 19.
Bangladesh continued their superb showing by following up a creditable batting effort with early strikes through their new-ball bowlers.
Opener Matthew Hayden (six) was trapped leg-before by Mashrafe bin Mortaza and captain Ricky Ponting fell similarly to Shahadat Hossain, the ball keeping a trifle low on both occasions.
Left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique
Veteran left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique then bowled Damien Martyn for four with another delivery that skidded through.
Earlier, MacGill bagged all five remaining wickets to restrict Bangladesh after they resumed on 355-5.
Bangladesh, who have struggled against most top teams in the past, crossed 400 in Tests for only the fourth time. It was their second best total after 488 against Zimbabwe in Chittagong during their only Test win.
Bangladesh's total threatened to inflate further after they lost just one wicket in the morning session, but MacGill bowled a superbly tight line and length to run through the batting, conceding just 26 runs.
