2 Sri Lankan cops killed in claymore mine attack
Wednesday, April 12 2006 11:44 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Colombo: At least two Sri Lankan policemen were killed and another two injured in a claymore mine attack by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels in the island's northeast today( Apr 12, 2006).

The victims were going to Trincomalee to buy food for their colleagues stationed further north of the main city when their truck was blown up at Kumburupiddi, a police official said.

"Two men were killed on the spot and the other two in the truck were injured and brought to the Trincomalee hospital," the official said.

"We are sure it is the work of the Tigers," a police official in Trincomalee, 260 kilometres north-east of the capital, said.

The blast came a day after a similar attack against a bus carrying sailors in the same district which killed 12 people.

The latest attack came despite appeals by Sri Lanka's peace broker Norway and the Scandinavian truce monitors for a de-escalation of violence that has cast a doubt over the ceasefire talks scheduled for next week in Switzerland.

The head of the truce monitors Ulf Henricsson was dueto meet with the leadership of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil eelam (LTTE) on the escalating violence.

Official sources said the meeting would be crucial to decide if the April 19-21 talks will go ahead as planned.
