Left Front not a destabilising factor: Brinda Karat
Thursday, April 20 2006 16:19 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Kottayam: Observing that the Left front has never been a destabilising factor in the country, CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat today (Apr 20, 2006) said if the government faces any instability it was because of its policies.

"Destabilisation in administration comes only when the Government moves away from its programmes they promised to the people, " she said, addressing a meet the press programme here.

The Left support was neither to the Congress nor to the UPA but for the implementation of the Common Minimum Programme. She blamed the UPA government for its failure to adhere to the CMP in many important spheres.

After the elections to the five state assemblies, the party's central committee will make a fresh assessment of its support to the government, she said, "We are extending outside support to the UPA on the basis of the CMP."

She said she was confident that the LDF will come to power in Kerala and achieve a historic victory in West Bengal. The development path followed by the UDF government in Kerala had resulted in grave setbacks to agriculture and domestic industry sectors which in turn led to the suicide of 15,000 farmers, she claimed.

About UDF's alliance with fundamentalists, the CPI-M politburo member said a drowning man will clutch the last straw. All people in one way or the other have been betrayed by UDF which was drowning, and this time they cannot be saved.

She charged that the previous NDA government led by BJP had not taken up a single issue concerning the people. The party was totally isolated from people's issues, she alleged.

In reply to a question on the issue whether the Government should implement Smart City project, she said people were not circumscribed to the clauses in the project.

She said the party has put up Sindhu Joy against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Puthupally. In the coming days, representation from women will definitely increase.
