Germany supports India-US civilian nuclear-pact Monday, April 24 2006 10:02 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Hannover (Germany):
Softening its stand, influential Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) member Germany today indicated its support to the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal as it acknowledged New Delhi's commitment to non-proliferation and backing by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
After talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during which the Indo-US nuclear deal figured, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said "We are on a positive path".
"We will be following discussions (on the deal) taking place in the US Congress which has to ratify it," she told a joint press conference, adding the discussions would also take place in the NSG.
She said if the process initiated in the US Congres and the NSG continues, Germany will be 'willing to cooperate' and 'extend cooperation in the civilian nuclear field'.
The statement marks a softening of stand of Germany which has so far expressed 'concerns' with regard to the deal and indicates growing support to the deal in the 35-member NSG which has to endorse it.
Russia, Britain and France have already committed their support but some countries like The Netherlands have expressed reservations.
Noting that during her talks with Singh the Indian leader had emphasised commitment to non-proliferation, Merkel said this was important for Germany.
"I have been assured that the non-proliferation of atomic weapons is an important aspect of India's international policies and this commitment is important for us," the German leader said.
