The Election Commission has found no abnormality in the high polling percentage in some booths of Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia and East Midnapore districts of West Bengal in the second phase of Assembly elections on Saturday (Apr 22, 2006).
"After having examined all documents, the Commission has come to the conclusion that polling of 80 per cent and above in some booths was not abnormal," state Chief Electoral Officer Debashish Sen told newsmen here today.
To a question, he said 91.66 per cent polling was reported from Goghat, 89.38 per cent from Pursura, 85.03 per cent from Arambag and 84.21 per cent from Khanakul, all in Hooghly district. Polling above 80 per cent was also reported from some other areas, he said.
Voters in the Kolkata and adjoining North and South 24- Parganas districts, scheduled to excercise their franchise on April 27, would be issued special identification certificates if they do not have EPICs or the EC-approved identification documents, Sen said.
A nine-member EC team will arrive here tomorrow to look into the problems of such voters, Sen said adding that the team would hear complaints till April 26 in the Netaji Indoor Stadium, Alipore Survey Building and the Jessop Building here, Sen added.
