'PM should take oppn into confidence on Siachen' Tuesday, April 25 2006 17:14 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Dehradun:
BJP today (Apr 25, 2006) asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take the opposition into confidence before taking any decision on the demilitarisation of Siachen
glacier.
Quoting National Security Advisor M K Narayanan's statement about troop withdrawal from Siachen along the Indo-Pak border, Singh said the government must take the
opposition into confidence before taking any decision of strategic importance.
Asserting that Pakistan had a 'dubious' track record, Singh said the Prime Minister must not take the decision in this regard in haste and should deliberate upon the subject
with all concerned parties.
"The decision could adversely affect our strategic interests and therefore the government must remain vigilant on the issue," Singh told reporters here on completion of the
5,500 km-long Bharat Suraksha Yatra in Uttaranchal.
He would now resume his yatra after taking part in election campaign in Kerala.
Narayanan had said talks were on between India and Pakistan for finalising modalities for authentication of present troop positions that can pave the way for demilitarisation of the world's highest battlefield.
He said his party was prepared for snap polls which cannot be ruled out. "There are difference within the UPA government as left parties are opposed to certain issues."
