Veteran leader G P Koirala was today (Apr 27, 2006) elected as leader of the Nepalese Congress Parliamentary Party, a day before reinstatement of Parliament.
81-year-old Koirala was named by the seven-party alliance on Tuesday to head the new government after King Gyanendra's proclamation of reinstatement of Parliament, one
of the major demands of pro-democracy activists.
Koirala has been unanimously elected NC Parliamentary Party's leader, said Nepali Congress office secretary Sobhakar Parajuli.
Nepali Congress Party now as 111 seats in the 205 member House of Representatives. As per the Nepalese Constitution, Parliamentary Party leader of the majority party
becomes the Prime Minister's candidate.
The Party will send the name of Koirala to the Royal Palace and it is likely that Koirala will be appointed Prime Minister this evening.
