Thursday, April 27 2006 14:10 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Mumbai: Zaheera Sheikh and her family members today (Apr 27, 2006) appeared before a sessions court for recording their plea on charges against them for giving false evidence to the court during the Best Bakery case retrial.

Spotlight: Godhra-Chilling stories of the victims

Zaheera was brought from Byculla jail, where she is serving one year sentence imposed on her by the Supreme Court for committing contempt.

Zaheera's mother Sahrunissa, sister Sahira Bano and brother Nasibullah also appeared before the court in response to a judicial directive to record their plea on charges of giving false evidence in the Best Bakery case.

The court had recently delivered the judgement in Best Bakery case and issued notices to Zaheera and her family to show cause as to why action should not be taken against them.

The court had earlier handed over a summary of charges to Zaheera and others asking them to file a reply.

Defence lawyer Umesh Deshpande said he would seek time to defer the recording of the plea of Zaheera and others as they were still studying the charges proposed by the court against them for giving false evidence.
