New Delhi: The three-member group set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to go into the rehabilitation of the families affected by Sardar Sarovar Project held its first meeting, an official release said today (Apr 28, 2006).

"The group, headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General V K Shunglu, held detailed discussions with officials for two days to devise a programme to fulfil its terms of reference,"it said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had early this week set up the 'Sardar Sarovar Project Relief and Rehabilitation Oversight Group' to report on the rehabilitation of the Project Affected Families (PAFs) of the project.

Former Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University,G K Chandha, and Jai Prakash Narayan, Convener of Loksatta, are the other members of the group.

Besides ascertaining the number of PAFs affected due to submergence caused by the raising of the dam height, itwould estimate, on the basis of sample checks, the number of PAFs who may not have received so far, in full measure, the Relief and Rehabilitation package as per the norms laid down.

The group has been asked to submit its report within three months.

The group would meet again on May nine, the release said.
