Guj: Curfew clamped in Vadodara, 6 hurt in clash Monday, May 1 2006 14:16 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Vadodara:
At least six persons were injured in clashes sparked off by the demolition of a dargah in Champaner Gate area here by Vadodara Municipal Corporation this morning, leading to imposition of curfew in the area.
The trouble started when the VMC squad started demolishing the 200-year-old dargh, despite members belonging to the minority community requesting the authorities and city mayor Sunil Solanki not to demolish the dargah as it will hurt the feelings of the community, police Commissioner Deepak Swarup told sources.
They demanded that it be declared as a heritage site. However, the VMC went ahead with its demolition plan as it was obstructing traffic, he said.
People from two groups started pelting stones and set on fire four shops, police said.
Police fired six rounds and lobbed more than 20 tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
Six persons have been injured and admitted to city hospitals, they said.
The situation is tense but under control, police added.
