Mumbai: A sessions court today (May 10, 2006) adjourned till May 15 the trial of Zaheera Shaikh and her family members, charged with giving false evidence in the Best Bakery case, after a prosecution plea.

Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian asked the court for sometime for going through the case records and other relevant material.

Additional Sessions Judge Abhay Thipsay, before whom the Best Bakery retrial was conducted, has suo motu initiated proceedings against Zaheera, prime witness in the case, her mother Seherunnisa, sister Sahira and brother Nasibullah for making false statements during the retrial.

Zaheera and her family members had yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charges of giving false evidence. As the trial was fixed for today, they appeared before the court.

Meanwhile, Zaheera's lawyer Umesh Deshpande told reporters that he was going to file revision petition in the Bombay High Court to challenge adverse remarks passed by Judge Thipsay against Zaheera in his Best Bakery judgement delivered in February.

Zaheera, lodged in Byculla jail, is undergoing one-year sentence imposed by Supreme Court for contempt of court.
