Congress sends Digvijay Singh, Kidwai to Guwahati
Thursday, May 11 2006 15:48 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: With the assembly polls in Assam throwing up a fractured verdict, the Congress leadership today (May 11, 2006) decided to despatch three senior leaders including Mohsina Kidwai and AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh to Guwahati.

AICC secretary Chandan Bagchi, who is in charge of party affairs in Assam, said he and Digvijay Singh were leaving for the northeastern state today and Kidwai, who has been named the central observer, will go there tomorrow.

The meeting of the newly elected Congress Legislature Party will be held at Guwahati on May 13 to elect its leader and Bagchi expressed confidence that the Congres would be able to again form government with the help of 'like-minded'parties.

The AICC has already declared its readiness to share power in Assam but said the BJP and the Brindaban Goswami- led Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) were 'untouchables'.

Despite Tarun Gogoi being the incumbent chief minister, the party has not projected anyone for the top post in its campaign.
