L K Advani to lead offensive on Office of Profit Bill
Tuesday, May 16 2006 14:42 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition L K Advani would lead the NDA's offensive against the Government Bill that proposes to exempt 46 posts, including the National Advisory Council Chairmanship from the purview of office of profit, when it is introduced in the Lok Sabha today (May 16, 2006).

This was decided at a meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party, chaired by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, here this morning.

The decision comes a day after NDA leaders decided to oppose the Bill tooth and nail on the ground that it was against the spirit of the Constitution.

"We will not allow the Government to bulldoze theParliament (Prevention of Disqualification) Amendment Bill 2006. We will oppose it at the introduction stage itself", BJP Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha V K Malhotra told reporters after the hour-long meeting of the Parliamentary Party.

Party sources said Advani would be specifically targeting the special clause in the Bill which seeks to exempt the post of Chairperson of the National Advisory Council.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who was heading the NAC, had resigned from the Lok Sabha and subsequently got re-elected from Rae Bareli in the wake of the controversy following Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan's disqualification from the Rajya Sabha for holding an office of profit in Uttar Pradesh.
