NHRC seeks report on police action on the medicos

New Delhi: Taking a serious view of the police action on medical students In Delhi and Mumbai, them NHRC today (May 16, 2006) sought a report from police in the matter.

The Commission also appealed to the Indian Medical Association, the Delhi Medical Association and the striking doctors to resume duties in the interest of the poor and ailing patients, an NHRC spokesperson told sources here.

"The NHRC has called for a factual report from the Police Commissioners in Delhi and Mumbai in respect of the unprovoked lathicharge on students in these places," she said.

The Commission has noted that if the allegations of police excesses are true, it raises a serious issue of violation of human rights.

The NHRC has given two weeks' time to the Delhi and Mumbai police to submit the report.
