'Reservation issue: Mechanism to satisfy all soon'

New Delhi: As protests against reservation snowballed, government met at the highest level and announced that it will come out shortly with a mechanism that would satisfy all sections of society.

After a 90-minute meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, however, gave no indication of any roll back of the proposal for reservation of seats for backward classes in elite educational institutions and central universities.

"You are aware that the Constitution has been amended to provide reservation to other backward classes", he said.

The CCPA meeting came a day after HRD Minister Arjun Singh ruled out going back on the proposal and said the it was for rthe Union Cabinet to take a decision.

Briefing reporters on the meeting, Mukherjee said, "We will ensure a mechanism in which the interest of all sections of society are taken care of. Details are being worked out and they will be announced shortly," he said.
