Security tightened for Prime Minister's visit in J&K Wednesday, May 24 2006 10:42 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Srinagar:
Amidst a spate of terrorist attacks over the last three days, exceptionally tight security measures have been put in place in the city for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit for the second roundtable conference today (May 24, 2006).
Police has been instructed not to allow any vehicle on the roads of the city, especially in those areas which fall in close vicinity of Srinagar airport, Sher-e-Kashmir
International Convention Centre (SKICC) the venue for the roundtable conference, and the commercial hub of Lal Chowk, official sources said.
Although no curfew has been declared in the city, security forces have prevented residents from venturing out of their localities.
Barbed wire fences have been erected at all exit points of localities in the city leading to main roads. The roads leading to SKICC and its adjacent areas have been put off
limits for public since Monday and residents have been asked to take alternate routes to reach their destinations.
"The stringent measures come in the wake of intelligence reports that militants have managed to sneak into the city some explosive laden cars to disrupt peace during the Prime Minister's visit, "the sources said.
Ultras have carried out two suicide attacks in the city within a span of three days. Two militants attacked a Congress rally on Sunday in which seven persons were killed,
including the two assailants.
Last evening a suicide bomber rammed his explosive laden car into a BSF vehicle on the Srinagar Airport road near Hyderpora Chowk injuring 27 personnel.
