Talks with PM fail, medicos gear up for agitation

New Delhi: After their first direct talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh remained inconclusive, striking anti-reservation medicos are gearing up for a show of strength today (May 27, 2006) by holding a massive rally here demanding a review of the entire reservation policy and putting on hold of introduction OBC quota till then.

Thousands of doctors and medical students from across the country will take out the rally from Vir Bhumi, Samadhi of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to Ramleela Grounds demanding rollback of the government's quota proposals and setting up of a Judicial Committee to review the reservation policy.

Students from Gujarat, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Jharkhand will join the rally. Traders, representatives of Residents Welfare Associations, teachers, lawyers and engineers will also attend the rally to show solidarity with the striking medicos.

They will also hold a candle light vigil, Anurag Mishra, representative of 'Youth for Equality', spearheading the anti-quota agitation said.

Meanwhile, students kept communication channels open and said they are ready for talks to find a solution to the emotive issue after their talks with the Prime Minister yesterday who assured them that they need not be worried over shrinking educational opportunities as he foresaw a massive expansion of the higher education system.

Late last night, the medicos held discussions with Union Health Secretary P K Hota at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He will meet students at Maulana Azad Medical college here again today.
