Cong awaits Rahul's decision for AICC reshuffle Tuesday, May 30 2006 10:53 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
A reshuffle of the AICC Secretariat appears to be pending for want of a decision by Rahul Gandhi on the role he wanted to play in the party in the days ahead.
Party sources said things would fall in place once Rahul decides to opt either for the party or the government and would lead to necessary changes in either of them.
They said it was for Rahul himself to resolve the dilemma and the earlier he does was better for the organisation.
The MP from Amethi has expressed readiness to work for the revival of the party in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the crucial assembly polls early next year but party leaders have been advocating him to play a larger role at the AICC.
Several party leaders have pleaded that he be made a AICC General Secretary in charge of Congress' frontal organisations to help mobilise the youth and other sections. They recall that Rajiv Gandhi also started his political career as AICC General Secretary.
A section of the party is, however, been of the view that Rahul should be drafted in the government as organisational work would be too hard an option for the young Gandhi as any failure there would affect the party too.
There have been demands at the Congress Plenary session in Hyderabad early this year to give a responsible position to Rahul and his mother and party chief Sonia Gandhi had recently hinted that something was on way for the young leader.
Currently, the party has a vacancy of an AICC General Secretary as also that of Chairman of Media Department in the wake of Ambika Sonia being made a Cabinet Minister. Congress Working Committee has five vacancies.
