TN: Coalition issue to come up during Sonia visit Sunday, June 4 2006 11:33 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The issue of Tamil Nadu Congressmen demand for a share in power may come up for discussion when Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, on his first visit to the capital after assumption of office, meets Congress President Sonia Gandhi here tomorrow (June 5, 2006).
After being in the political wilderness for nearly four decades, the state Congress feels it has the best chance of getting into government with 34 MLAs in a coalition being witnessed for the first time in Tamil Nadu.
But indications are that the Congress leadership was not in undue hurry on participating in the government due to compulsions of the coalition at the Centre.
At the same time, the party leadership may like the Chief Minister to understand the sentiments of the Congress Legislature Party which was keen on participating in the government.
Congress has 34 MLAs in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly. The DMK, with 96 MLAs, is 22 members short of a majority, and its Government is supported by its allies, which include the Congress, PMK, and Left parties.
