NCP won't support Cong candidate in RS election Monday, June 5 2006 10:47 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
Congress and NCP, partners in ruling DF Government in Maharashtra, are headed for confrontation over the June 15 Rajya Sabha election being held to fill up the vacancy created by death of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.
Congress had decided to field its candidate for this seat but NCP said today it would not support the Congress' candidate.
"We have decided not to support Congress for the June 15 election as they did not support our candidate in recent legislative council elections," NCP Maharashtra unit President Arun Gujarathi told sources.
"NCP would not field its own candidate but support an independent candidate from non-political fields such arts or sports," he said.
Tomorrow is the last day for filing nomination for the election. Congress sources said party had decided to field Avinash Pande, former office-bearer of NSUI for the election.
