'Scale of terror attacks up very substantially' Monday, June 5 2006 10:13 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The scale of terror attacks in the country, particularly outside Jammu and Kashmir, has 'gone up very substantially' and targets have become 'extremely high profile,' National Security Advisor M K Narayanan said yesterday (June 4, 2006).
"Quite clearly, the scale of attacks particularly has gone up very substantially. Targets have become extremely high profile," Narayanan said and cautioned if they (terrorists) do succeed, it could lead to major violence across the country.
Observing that government has been successful in preventing a number of incidents despite criticism of it being soft on terror, he however told Times Now TV news channel that "We are facing a situation far from comfortable. Pakistan could do much more to check terrorism emanating from across the border".
It would have been easier had the incidence of terrorism come down, Narayanan said.
He said, "Prime Minister has an invitation from President Musharraf. But he has not yet decided when he will accept the invitation. It is unlikely that it would be this summer".
Maintaining that the Prime Minister's visit was not linked with the rise in terrorist incidents in India, he however said, "Terrorism needs to be ended or at least reduced considerably because without that long-term improvement in India-Pakistan relations will always be a problem".
