Nepal Govt rules out dissolution of Parliament
Friday, June 9 2006 18:34 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Kathmandu: Amidst Maoists' demand that the re-instated Parliament be dissolved, Nepal's Government today (June 9, 2006) said no threats or pressure can force it to do so.

"The reinstated Parliament will not be dissolved coming under any pressure or because of any threat," said Madhav Kumar Nepal, the General Secretary of Nepal Communist Party-UML which is an important constituent of the ruling seven-party alliance.

His remarks came a day after Maoist leader Prachanda demanded immediate dissolution of the re-instated House of Representatives (HoR) and warned of further bloodshed, if the government tried to move ahead with making Parliament the Supreme body.

"The HoR will be dissolved only after a dependable representative body is established," Nepal said at a programme here.

While endorsing Prachanda's demand for an interim government that includes Maoists too, Nepal appealed to him not to be suspicious and create confusion among the people against the seven parties.

"The seven parties have already begun to work for a Government that includes both the seven parties and the Maoists," he said.

On the Maoist supremo's warning to 'return to the jungle'if the local bodies are reinstated, Nepal said that the seven parties were ready to discuss the issue.

He also said the UN's help would be essential to monitor the ceasefire, Maoist arms management and holding of the Constituent Assembly elections, but ruled out the need for an active UN role in the country.
