New Delhi:
The Supreme Court today (June 12, 2006) sought response from the Centre on the allegation that people supporting the government move to extend reservation in the institutions of higher education held rallies in the capital and elsewhere in the country in violation of its order.
The advocate, appearing for the doctors, who had called off their protest and strike on the apex court directions, alleged before a Vacation Bench comprising Justice Arijit
Pasayat and Justice Altamas Kabir that a pro-reservation rally was organised on June 4 at India Gate where the protoganist of pro-quota formed human chain as a part of their agitation.
The counsel said similar rally was also held at Pune in Maharashtra where it got support of some political parties.
"The holding of rallies and demonstration even by the pro-quota supporters was in violation of the apex court order of the May 31," he said.
While directing the medicos to call off forthwith all strikes, protests, demonstrations or any form of dissent, the court had made it clear that whosoever will have any grievance
on the reservation issue can approach it.
Meanwhile, Solicitor General G E Vahanvati placed before the Bench the status report in compliance with the May 31 and June 1 orders of the apex court.
The report said strikes and protest were called off across the country and doctors have resumed their work.
