Dhaka: Bangladesh general strike enters second day Wednesday, June 14 2006 12:58 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Dhaka:
Security was stepped up in Bangladesh as the Opposition-sponsored general strike called to press for sweeping electoral reforms and protest police action during Sunday's 'Dhaka Seige', in which hundreds were injured, entered its second day today (June 14, 2006).
Over 100 people were injured yesterday when police used batons, rubber bullets and tear gas to control violent opposition activitists during the 36-hour long general strike.
Police was on alert on the second day of the strike and there were no immediate reports of violence.
The 14-party opposition alliance has called for the strike to press for electoral reforms and to protest the police action during Sunday's 'Dhaka Seige' in which hundreds were injured.
Awami League chief and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed has said they would continue their struggle in the House and also out on the street to realize their demands.
The opposition has threatened to boycott the next general elections set for early 2007 unless their demands are met, which the Government says is a ploy to jeopardise polls.
