Left leaders to meet their UPA counterparts soon Thursday, June 15 2006 11:50 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
After presenting a virtual chargesheet against the government on its performance so far, top Left leaders would meet their UPA counterparts here tomorrow and focus on implementation of 'pro-people' policies and promises made in the Common Minimum Programme.
The meeting of the Left-UPA Coordination Committee, to be attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and senior Cabinet ministers, is likely to debate the note submitted by the Left leaders on the performance of the government they are supporting from outside.
In the note, the Left parties are understood to have made a critical appraisal of the coalition's performance and accused it of having lost political direction and deviated from the CMP on key issues.
The CPI(M), CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc leaders, who gave final touches to the note at a meeting yesterday, have dealt at length about the "failure" to combat communalism as promised in the CMP.
These parties questioned government moves to divest profit-making PSUs, privatise major airports, failure to check inflation and the intention to move towards full capital account convertibility.
They also expressed concern over volatility in the stock market caused by heightened role of FIIs and speculators.
Another major area of concern for them was government's role in agricultural sector, including extending credit to farmers to bring them out of debt trap, opening of the agro market and problems relating to minimum support prices.
The issue of declining buffer stock, slashing of supplies under the Public Distribution System also figure in the note.
The note also cautions government on the foreign policy front and accuses it of 'succumbing' to US pressure on various matters, describing them as deviations from the CMP.
