Pakistan: Musharraf to seek re-election in 2007
Thursday, June 15 2006 10:41 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Moscow: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has announced his intention to seek re-election in 2007.

"In accordance with the constitution, presidential elections are to be held next year. I will take part in them, which is in line with the statute," Musharraf was quoted as saying by ITAR-TASS.

"I am a committed supporter of democracy and have trust in it. I believe that the army should not rule the state," Musharraf said in an interview to the news agency's Russian service ahead of today's meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Shanghai.

Musharraf said a 'democratic system' has been created in Pakistan, which enjoyed 'mass backing'.
