PM assures economic package for drought-hit areas

Dhamangaon (Amaravati): The Government will soon announce an economic package focussing on irrigation facilities in the drought hit areas of Maharashtra, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here today (June 30, 2006).

Speaking at a meeting after visiting some of the drought-hit areas around here, Singh said, "We will announce a package for providing irrigation facilities to the farmers."

The Prime Minister said the Central government and the state governments were concerned over the plight of the farmers in the drought-hit areas.

"We are with you in this hour and we will try to do as much as possible for the people of the region," Singh said.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Agriculture and Food Minister Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and senior Congress leader Margaret Alva.
