Sonia asks government to tighten security Tuesday, July 11 2006 21:35 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) Sonia Gandhi, Congress president and chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Tuesday condemned the serial blasts in Mumbai and asked the government to take stringent security measures to maintain peace and harmony in its wake.
Expressing grief and shock at the incident, Gandhi said it was a "dastardly and inhuman act" and appealed to people to "collectively isolate such elements from society".
At least 100 people were killed and 250 injured Tuesday as seven powerful bombs exploded on moving or stationary suburban trains in India's financial capital.
Gandhi held discussions with Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and asked them to tighten security to ensure peace and harmony.
"She has asked the state government to undertake relief measures and apprehend the culprits immediately," a Congress statement said.
Gandhi, who sent her condolence to the bereaved families, was expected to visit Mumbai soon.
