2002-03 blasts accused to be questioned for 7/11 Saturday, July 15 2006 12:34 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
Accused in the 2002-03 bomb blast cases, who are currently in various jails of Mumbai and Thane, will be questioned in connection with Tuesday's serial bomb blasts in suburban trains, police sources said here today (July 15, 2006).
Nearly three dozen persons booked in Ghatkopar, Vile Par , Mulund and Gateway of India bomb blast cases in 2002 and 2003 are currently lodged in the two jails, sources said.
Police believe that many of them allegedly have close links with outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India, which is suspected to have carried out the seven blasts on the
instruction of Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Sources said that permission from the court may also be sought to question them.
The interrogation was aimed at finding out if they have clues about missing SIMI members or those SIMI members who may have been in touch with LeT cadre.
Police sources added that at least half a dozen Mumbai Crime Branch officers have joined the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) to probe into the July 11 blasts, which killed at least 200 and injured over 700.
Nearly a dozen teams formed by ATS and Crime Branch are now into the job of scrutnising a vast collection of data, which was gathered in the past four days.
"The information will be scrutinised on elimination basis, and the left over information is likely to provide us important clues in the probe case," sources said.
Earlier in the day, police sources, quoting forensic reports, have said that the deadly RDX explosive was not used in Tuesday's serial blasts.
"Forensic authorities had performed tests on nearly ten samples collected from the blast spots and all of them have reportedly come negative for RDX," sources said.
"Tests were now being performed to find out which explosive was used, and the needle of suspicion is pointing at dynamite or other explosives," sources said.
Mumbai police sources said that the focus of the ongoing probe into the blasts is likely to change with the forensic report suggesting that RDX was not used.
"Involvement of smaller groups, who may have been motivated by terrorist groups like LeT, was now being probed," sources said.
