Russian security agencies had foiled a terror plot to target the just-concluded G-8 summit in Saint Petersburg, a top security official yesterday (July 18, 2006) said.
"The plans and objectives hatched by terrorist leaders and extremist organizations to thwart the summit in St. Petersburg were uncovered and prevented," FSB security service chief General Nikolai Patrushev was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.
Patrushev, who is ex-officio chairperson of the National Anti-terror Committee said security groups had been on high alert both at the summit venue and in the troubled North Caucasus region. He, however, gave no other details.
