Kenyan cops claim arrest of Indian terror suspect Friday, July 21 2006 17:04 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mombasa (Kenya):
Kenyan police have said they had arrested one of India's most-wanted terror suspects, whose Lashkar-e-Toiba militant group may have been behind this month's deadly rail blasts in Mumbai.
Anti-terrorism police in the Indian Ocean port city of Mombasa said they had detained Abdul Karim Tunda and would be turning him over to prosecutors for possible extradition to India.
"We arrested him today (Thursday) in Mombasa," a senior police official told AFP on condition of anonymity yesterday.
"He is wanted for the bombings in Mumbai. He will be handed over because he is on the wanted list," he said.
A second senior Mombasa police official confirmed that a man authorities had identified as Abdul Karim Tunda had been detained but refused to provide any details of the suspect's arrest.
It was not immediately clear why Tunda may have been in Kenya, although the east African nation has a substantial south Asian minority population.
