BJP suggests Parliament resolution on nuke policy Tuesday, July 25 2006 12:26 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The main Opposition BJP yesterday (July 24, 2006) suggested a unanimous Parliament resolution on the country's nuclear policy, which could serve as a reference point for all bilateral and multilateral agreements on the key subject.
"Referring to the controversial Indo-US nuclear deal, BJP Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj is understood to have told the Business Advisory Committee of the Upper House that instead of making it a debating issue, both the rulingand Opposition parties should unanimously support a resolution moved by the Chair on the nuclear issue," sources said.
The resolution, on the lines of similar resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir and Iraq, could assert that India would not compromise on sovereignty, would have the discretion to decide on civilian and nuclear installations besides delineating the country's stand on CTBT.
"It would set a limit, a Lakshman Rekha of sorts thus far and no further. It would strengthen the Prime Minister's hands too as he would then have the backing of the
Parliament", party sources said.
They claimed that Left parties supported the suggestion and the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachouri agreed to positively look into it.
